Two killed, three injured, over 1000 affected due to heavy rain in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 30 (UNI) Two people, including a woman, lost their lives and three others sustained injuries due to landslides and drowning triggered by heavy rains in Meghalaya on Friday.
Klosliya Kharkongor, a 50-year-old woman died after a landslide struck her home in Lumkyntung village under Laitkroh- Khatarshnong Block, while Samborlang Tariang (35) drowned at Wah Krot in Mawbynna at Pomlakrai, Commissioner & Secretary, Revenue & Disaster Management department, Sanjay Goyal said.
Goyal also informed that at least 1023 population in 25 villages have been affected due to the rain-induced.
Houses and business establishments were also damaged and people were injured in different parts of the districts, according to the District Disaster Management Authority.
In several areas trees were uprooted and roads were waterlogged. Some of the roads in the state capital have been temporarily closed.
Seven major roads were affected by landslides and waterlogging, while one school, Buddha Vidya Niketan in Polo area in the city, was inundated with floodwaters.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma
chaired an urgent review meeting with all Deputy Commissioners to assess the scale of damage and coordinate emergency response efforts across the State.
During the meeting, Commissioner and Secretary Sanjay Goyal presented an overview of district-level preparedness and calamity reports.
With adverse weather expected to continue until May 31, the Chief Minister directed all departments to stay on high alert for the next 24 hours, especially in landslide-prone and low-lying areas, and to take measures to prevent traffic disruptions and assist commuters.
“Districts are to be divided into operational zones for better disaster management. Field officers must remain at headquarters for prompt action, and immediate relief must be provided to affected families,” Sangma said.
He said MeECL has been instructed to urgently restore power in affected areas, deploying additional manpower to speed up the process.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.
