Union Minister George Kurian pledges support for Mizoram’s fisheries growth

Aizawl, May 24 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, George Kurian, arrived in Aizawl on Saturday with a promise to boost Mizoram’s fisheries sector, saying the state holds “huge potential” for development.
Kurian, welcomed at Lengpui Airport by Fisheries Minister Lalthansanga and senior officials, spent the day touring private fish ponds in Lengpui and inspecting the proposed site for the Fish Farmers’ Training Centre under the North Eastern Council at Laldenga Fisheries Demonstration Farm.
During the visit, Mizoram officials highlighted the hurdles faced by local fish farmers and sought Central Government approval for pending projects, including the Integrated Aqua Park planned at Zawlnuam, Mamit district. Kurian reassured them, pointing to the Equity Grant under the Fish Farmers Producer Organisation (FFPO) as a key solution to financial challenges.
He encouraged local production initiatives, including startups, to address gaps like fish feed supply.
The Union Minister underlined the importance of spreading awareness about government schemes available to fish farmers and assured the state that his ministry would send officers to conduct outreach programmes.
He added that the Centre prioritises Northeastern states and sees Mizoram as ripe for fisheries expansion, with officials reporting that 26.5% of Mizoram’s 24,000 hectares of aquaculture-suitable land is currently being utilised.
In Aizawl city, Kurian visited Ornamental Fish Rearing Units at Khatla, selected as Sales Outlets under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the flagship scheme aimed at driving India’s Blue Revolution by modernising fisheries and ensuring fishers’ welfare.
Adding a sporting touch to his visit, the Mizoram Volleyball Association greeted Kurian at the airport, with the Union Minister set to attend the Pro Volleyball League at LPS Arena, Falkland, tonight before heading back to New Delhi on Sunday.
