UP: Marriage of 12-yr-old girl & 17 yr-old boy averted in Jaunpur

Jaunpur, Oct 28 (UNI) A wedding between a 12-year-old girl from the Musahar community and a 17-year-old boy in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district on Tuesday evening was stopped at the last minute by authorities after receiving information from Aastha Mahila Evam Bal Vikas Sanstha, a partner organisation of Just Rights for Children (JRC), India’s largest NGO network working for child protection.
The information came from a labourer working for an associate of the organisation. He mentioned that he needed to leave early to attend the wedding of a relative’s daughter. When the representative of the organisation asked about the girl’s age, the labourer disclosed that she was very young, did not want to marry and that her family was rushing ahead with the wedding.
Acting on the information, the organisation’s team reached the wedding venue in the Chandwak area and found that the preparations were nearly complete, with the family waiting for the ‘baraat’. The team alerted Childline, the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer and the police, following which a joint team reached the spot just as the rituals were underway.

The officials explained the legal provisions regarding child marriage to the girl’s parents and cautioned them about the consequences of an early marriage for her education and future. The father subsequently signed an affidavit undertaking not to marry off his daughter before she attained the legal age for marriage. The girl’s parents earn their livelihood as labourers at a brick kiln. The scale of the wedding preparations, despite the family’s circumstances, has raised concerns about possible third-party involvement or a financial arrangement, though this has not been established.
So many people were present at the wedding, yet no one stopped to think that the girl was at an age when she should be in school and not getting married. Child marriage is not only a private family matter, but it also robs a child of her childhood, education and fundamental rights. It will also end only when people choose to speak up instead of remaining silent when they see a child being married off,” said Santosh Kumar Pandey, director of Aastha Mahila Evam Bal Vikas Sanstha.
He also said the organisation would ensure that the girl was enrolled in school so that she could pursue her dreams. During her appearance before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the girl said she had repeatedly told her family that she did not want to marry and wished to study, but her pleas had gone unheard. Instead, she had been made to work at the brick kiln.
