Uttarakhand will resort to state's second 600 MW pump storage power project after THDC's first 1000 MW on Bhagirathi

Dehradun Oct 13(UNI) Uttarakhand government will develop its power storage capacity to meet its power needs during peak electricity demand hours of the state. Government has decided to commission state's second Pumped Storage Project with the capacity of 600 MW.
The decision to resort to pump storage hydroelectric project was taken in the board of directors meeting of Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (UJVNL) on Monday. Board granted its nod for commissioning long awaited 600MW Ichhari Pump storage hydroelectric project in Garhwal. This will be second pump storage technology power project of the state after THDC's first 1000 MW plant was commissioned on Bhagirathi river in Tehri.
According to UJVNL officials this will help the state not only meet its peak hours demand but also off load the dependence for power on other states. Sharing the information as to board meeting UJVNL managing director AK Singh said that it's a key initiative towards developing energy storage capacity of the state for ensuring power availability during peak demand days of the year.
Singh informed that the Ichari Pumped Storage Project is estimated to generate approximately 1,246 million units of electricity annually during peak hours. "Once commissioned the project is expected to help meet state's power requirements during peak demand times. Enhanced power availability during peak hours will help reduce dependence for power on other states and institutions" added Singh.
Singh explained that power generation under pumped power storage technology works on availability of two water reservoirs with one at lower side and another on higher elevation. Singh said "Water is pumped to an elevated reservoir during low-demand periods or when surplus electricity is available. On the other hand this water is released downward through turbines to generate power during high needs hours. This entire system is regarded as energy storage process and its usage in accordance with the need." "This technology can assist in making better use of surplus electricity available from solar and other renewable energy sources and lead to adequate balance of power demand and supply. Apart from this this will come as big support for
maintaining grid stability" said Singh.
UJVNL MD added that board of directors also cleared the proposal for electromechanical works of the 300 MW under construction Lakhwar Multipurpose Project. Singh claimed that the decision will help advance and speed up the upcoming works of the Lakhwar Multipurpose Project.
Along with these decision board approved proposal for appointment of a statutory auditor for the financial year 2026-27 along with its cost of audit preparing report for the financial year 2025-26.
