Vedanta doubles Zinc production capacity in South Africa with $600 million investment

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) Vedanta Ltd has doubled its annual zinc production capacity in South Africa to 500,000 tonnes following an investment of nearly $600 million in the second phase of its Gamsberg project, the company said on Sunday.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Ltd Director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar inaugurated the expanded capacity at Gamsberg in the Northern Cape province, home to one of the world's significant zinc deposits.
The expansion is part of Vedanta's broader ambition to achieve annual zinc production of three million tonnes across India and South Africa. Of this, its subsidiary Hindustan Zinc Ltd aims to contribute two million tonnes, while Vedanta Zinc International plans to produce one million tonnes annually.
The company said the expansion would strengthen its ability to meet growing global demand for zinc, which is widely used to protect steel from corrosion and is essential to construction, automotive, manufacturing and infrastructure development.
The investment is also part of Vedanta's commitment to invest 21 billion rand (nearly $1.5 billion) in South Africa, announced at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference.
Welcoming the expansion, Ramaphosa said the investment had progressed from commitment to construction and production. He also expressed support for Vedanta's ambition to establish zinc smelting capacity in the Northern Cape, calling for cooperation between the government and the company to address its requirements.
Priya Agarwal-Hebbar said the Gamsberg Phase II expansion reflected Vedanta's long-term commitment to South Africa's industrial growth and economic development.
"Our ambition is to build a globally significant zinc and industrial hub in the region, creating lasting value for the country and its people," she said, adding that the success of the project should be measured not only by production but also by the prosperity it generates for future generations.
Vedanta said it had invested nearly $20 million in community initiatives in South Africa since acquiring Vedanta Zinc International in 2011. The programmes cover healthcare, education, sports, livelihoods, infrastructure and social welfare, benefiting more than 32,000 people annually.
The company also said Vedanta Zinc International had opened an oncology centre in Namakwa earlier this year as part of its community development initiatives.UNI AAB
