Venugopal questions BJP's integrity, revives row over Amit Shah's discharge in Sohrabuddin Case

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) Congress general secretary K C Venugopal Monday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of promoting leaders facing serious criminal allegations while projecting itself as a party committed to honesty and integrity. Referring to a court ruling concerning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 2018 remarks about union Home Minister Amit Shah, Venugopal questioned the BJP's claims of ethical conduct and accountability in public life.
In a post on the social media platform X, Venugopal said, "People in India forget that the president of the BJP is a murder accused. That's the truth. The party that talks about honesty, decency, has a person who has been accused of murder as president."
Venugopal maintained that the court had clearly held there was nothing defamatory about Rahul Gandhi's 2018 statement concerning Shah. Citing the ruling, he sought to challenge the BJP's claims of probity and accused the ruling party of applying different standards of accountability to itself and its political opponents.
"The facts are before us — this is a party run by criminals, promoting those who commit the worst of crimes to the highest echelons of power," Venugopal said, intensifying the Congress's criticism of the BJP over allegations concerning criminal cases involving its leaders.
Describing the Congress's campaign as a "noble fight", Venugopal said his party would continue its opposition through peaceful means. "We will fight on Gandhian lines and defeat them with love, compassion and perseverance," he said, ending his message with the slogan "Satyamev Jayate".
The controversy relates to Rahul Gandhi's remarks in 2018 concerning Shah and the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was killed in a police encounter in Gujarat in 2005. Shah, who was a senior BJP leader at the time, had faced prosecution in the case but was discharged by a special Central Bureau of Investigation court in 2014. The discharge meant that he was not required to face trial in that case.
Venugopal's remarks form part of the Congress's broader political campaign challenging the BJP's claims of clean governance and demanding greater accountability from those occupying positions of power. The Congress has repeatedly argued that allegations involving public figures should be examined against the standards of transparency and integrity expected of elected representatives.
The political accusations in Venugopal's post, however, need to be distinguished from established legal findings. The reference to Shah concerns his prosecution and subsequent discharge in the Sohrabuddin case, while Venugopal's broader characterisation of the BJP and its leadership reflects the Congress's political position in its continuing confrontation with the ruling party.
