Vice-President calls for blending cultural heritage with development at Navaratri Sargotsavam

Kozhikode, Oct 16 (UNI) Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday called for preserving India's cultural heritage while advancing development, asserting that the country's civilisational values would continue to provide strength and direction amid modernisation.
Inaugurating Navaratri Sargotsavam 2026 here, he said the festival conveyed the timeless message that courage must overcome fear, righteousness must prevail over injustice and knowledge must dispel ignorance.
The Vice-President released the book Sangha Noottandile Akshara Mudrakal and presented the Sarga Kesari Award to P. R. Rajendran for his contributions to the fine arts.
Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan said Navaratri celebrated Adi Parashakti, the divine feminine power representing creation, strength, wisdom and compassion. The values associated with the festival remained relevant in guiding society towards a more just and harmonious future, he said.
Referring to the diverse ways in which Navaratri was celebrated across India, he said differences in languages, customs and forms of worship did not diminish the country's shared civilisational bonds. Instead, they reflected the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat', he added.
Emphasising the vision of 'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi', the Vice-President said heritage and development should progress together. Comparing India's cultural roots to those of a banyan tree, he said traditions and values provided a firm foundation even as the country expanded its horizons through modernisation and progress.
Radhakrishnan congratulated Kesari Weekly for organising the festival and appreciated its role in Malayalam journalism, the promotion of democratic values and the protection of freedom of expression.
He expressed hope that the festival would inspire the younger generation, provide encouragement to artists and reinforce efforts to safeguard India's cultural legacy while embracing innovation.
He also called for building a compassionate society that stood against injustice, shared prosperity with disadvantaged sections and used knowledge for the welfare of all.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Rajya Sabha MP C. Sadanandan Master, Navaratri Sargotsavam Samiti president Vidhubala, working president A. K. Prasanth and other dignitaries attended the function.
