Madras HC dismisses fresh plea seeking CBI probe into Veeramani POCSO cases

Chennai, OCt 16 (UNI) The Madras High Court, on Friday dismissed as withdrawn yet another PIL seeking to transfer the probe in the POCSO case involving grantine baron R.Veeramani to the CBI.
This was for second time in two days a plea seeking a similar prayer was dismissed as withdrawn.
In the fresh plea filed by one Devarajan, the First Bench of Chief Justice SA. Dharmadhikari and Justice G.Arul Murugan noted that a single judge had already dismissed a similar plea, taking note of the substantial progress made by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Tamil Nadu government, probing the cases. The probe was going on in the right direction.
The court noted that the petitioner had not projected any single valid reason warranting transferring the probe to the CBI and observed that the plea was only filed to stall the proceedings and not with a bonafide cause.
"We do not find any valid ground projected by the petitioner for seeking the reliefs. The present public interest litigation is filed only to stall the proceedings and not with any bonafide cause," the court said.
Since the court showed disinclination to entertain the plea, the petitioner requested for withdrawing the plea. Accepting the request, the court dismissed the plea as withdrawn.
The First Bench had on October 14 dismissed as withdrawn, a petition seeking to transfer the investigation into the POCSO cases against Gem Granites owner Veeramani to the CBI.
An earlier plea filed by one Varahi was being heard by Mr Justice V.Lakshminarayanan who had already refused a similar prayer on September 30 saying the SIT formed by the Tamil Nadu government should be given breathing space to collect all the evidences in the case. The Judge also observed that the Tamil Nadu police did not have a crystal ball or a magic wand to get all the evidence at once, adding the SIT should be permitted to carry on with the probe.
The Judge again rejected the CBI probe demand, when the case came up for hearing on October seven, holding that the probe by the SIT was progressing and that the POCSO Court Judge S.Padma has been handling the case well before posting the case to October 26 for further hearing.
In this backdrop, a Chennai-based advocate C Rajasekaran filed a separate plea seeking a CBI probe. In his plea, he said the Central Crime Branch registered a sexual assault case based on a pen drive provided by a child welfare activist in October 2025. The police later filed a closure report before the POCSO court, stating that the minor victims could not be traced. However, the special court refused to accept the report and ordered further investigation resulting in the arrest of seven people, including the tainted bizman Veeramani, two of his acquaintances Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simkan, his former employee Ganesan and three of his drivers for bringing minor girls to him.
The petitioner said the victims had since been identified and their statements recorded, and that the investigation was progressing swiftly. However, he alleged that media reports based on speculations were linking political party leaders and others to the case, potentially obstructing the investigation and creating doubts among the public. He also pointed out that photographs and videos showing Veeramani alongside leaders of ruling and opposition parties were being circulated on social media, creating an impression that political leaders were connected to the accused.
Citing concerns over the alleged politicisation of the case, the petitioner prayed for transferring the probe to the CBI and a ban on the publication of photographs and videos related to the case by the media and in social media platforms.
When the petition came up for hearing before the First Bench the petitioner's counsel sought permission to withdraw it, pointing out that the State government had already constituted an SIT to investigate the case.
The Chief Justice questioned the petitioner about the circumstances that necessitated filing the plea. In response, his counsel said the plea was filed before the SIT was constituted. Accepting the submissions, the Bench allowed it and dismissed the petition as withdrawn.
Now yet another plea for same prayer too was dismissed as withdrawn.
