VP asks doctors to balance technological advancement with human compassion

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 27 (UNI) Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday called upon young doctors to embrace emerging technologies while preserving the human values at the heart of medical care, saying artificial intelligence and robotics could assist doctors but never replace their human role.
Addressing the 15th Graduation Day ceremony of Sree Uthradom Thirunal (SUT) Academy of Medical Sciences here as Chief Guest, he said the healthcare sector was undergoing rapid transformation with the growing use of Artificial Intelligence, robotics, digital health, advanced imaging and precision medicine.
“Technology can assist a doctor, but it cannot replace the human aspects of a doctor,” Radhakrishnan said.
“A machine can analyse. A robot can assist. An algorithm can identify patterns. But a patient still needs a doctor who can listen, understand, reassure and take responsibility,” he said.
He said the introduction of robotic surgery and computer-aided diagnosis facilities at SUT Academy was significant and reflected the need to keep medical education and healthcare in step with technological progress.
“The true strength of a medical institute lies in the quality of education it provides, the doctors it produces, the research it undertakes and the patients it serves,” he said.
Radhakrishnan urged the graduating doctors to uphold the trust represented by the white coat through accuracy in diagnosis, honesty in communication, compassion in treatment and integrity in every decision.
He said scientific excellence and human compassion should go hand in hand in the medical profession.
Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, the Vice-President said access to higher education was central to the country's development and noted that the vision could be realised only when every State, district and village progressed.
He pointed out that medical education had expanded considerably over the past 12 years, noting that while the country earlier had only one AIIMS in New Delhi, 12 new AIIMS had since been established.
Radhakrishnan also highlighted the increasing participation of women in higher education, saying he had witnessed a welcome trend at convocations across the country, with women increasingly receiving more degrees and medals than men.
At the SUT graduation ceremony, 60 women and 32 men received undergraduate degrees, while five women and two men received postgraduate degrees.
He asked the graduating doctors to carry three principles with them — “Knowledge in their minds, Compassion in their hearts, Integrity in their conduct.”
The Vice-President urged them to remain confident while being humble, ambitious while remaining ethical, technologically advanced while compassionate, and successful while staying connected with society. He also called upon them to “always say No to drugs.”
Concluding his address, Radhakrishnan wished the graduates a successful, meaningful and fulfilling professional journey and said the greatest privilege of being a doctor was the opportunity to make a difference in another human being's life.
Governor of Tamil Nadu and Kerala Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, Minister for Labour, Animal Husbandry and Women and Child Development Bindhu Krishna, SUT Academy of Medical Sciences Chairman A. C. Shanmugam, Kerala University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal, faculty members, staff, graduating students and their families attended the ceremony.
