War of words between two senior MPs embarrasses party

Kolkata, June 29 (UNI) Amid the massive embarrassment caused by the alleged gang rape of a student in a South Kolkata law college by youths affiliated to West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress, the party faces further discomfiture as two of its MPs, Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra, got engaged in a public war of words.

The spat reached a flashpoint today when Banerjee hit out at Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra and said, “I hate only one lady and that is Mahua Moitra.”

Taking a jibe against Moitra’s personal life, the Sreerampore MP said, “She is most anti-woman. She only knows about her future. She only knows how to make money.”

He also launched a vicious attack on Moitra related to her new marriage to former BJD MP
Pinaki Mishra.

“An MP who was expelled from parliament for breach of ethics is preaching to me! She is the most anti-woman,” he further added.

Banerjee was furious after Moitra made a post on her X handle indirectly pinching Banerjee for his comments on the alleged gang rape in South Kolkata law college.

“Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates AITC is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them,” Moitra wrote.

Moitra’s comment came hours after Banerjee, commenting on the rape, claimed that it would not be possible for government authorities to protect the victim in such cases, "where a friend rapes another friend".

Not only Banerjee, another party MLA, Madan Mitra, added to the outrage by suggesting the incident could have been avoided had the student taken a couple of friends with her or informed others before going there, prompting the party — facing mounting embarrassment —to go into damage control.

The party immediately issued a statement that read, “The remarks made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally dissociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever.”

Although Moitra’s response was framed as a reaction to the Trinamool Congress statement, it was indirectly aimed at the two senior party leaders who defied the party’s ‘zero tolerance’ stance on violence against women.

Not only Moitra but Banerjee also criticised the party stance and said, “Whatever anyone says, I cannot accept it. If I am condemned for that, I have no problem. I completely disagree with the statement from the party. Are they indirectly supporting the leaders who are shielding these criminals? Mere academic statements won’t bring any real change unless immediate action is taken against those leaders directly responsible.”

Meanwhile the Trinamool Congress issued a show-cause notice to senior party leader and MLA Madan Mitra over his controversial remarks on the issue.

Following widespread backlash, Mitra released a statement on his official X handle, denying any attempt to shield the accused and claiming his remarks were misinterpreted and exploited by a motivated group seeking to malign the party’s image. UNI XC SSP
