Wave of bomb threats disrupts air traffic across Europe

London, Nov 6 (UNI) A fresh wave of bomb threats disrupted air traffic across Europe on Friday, as flights were diverted, grounded and escorted by fighter jets, in the second major outbreak of false alerts in less than a week.
The affected aircraft landed safely and searches revealed no explosive devices.
The latest alerts affected at least 18 flights to or from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czechia, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania and the UK.
Danish police investigated a threat against Copenhagen airport but the airport’s management said it was operating normally. The warnings followed separate threats on Tuesday and Thursday that forced at least 35 flights to be diverted or searched, raising questions over an apparently coordinated effort to cause chaos for travellers.
A number of European media outlets – including news organisations in Bulgaria, Ireland and the UK – have reported that a group claiming responsibility for this week’s threats sent an email to several outlets warning of further attacks on transport across Europe.
“This is only the beginning,” it reportedly said.
Hungary said it had scrambled fighter jets three times to escort aircraft through its airspace following bomb alerts received by authorities, including against a WizzAir flight from Brussels to Sofia in Bulgaria, as well as against to flights from Prague to Bucharest and Cyprus.
Prague airport confirmed to media that nine flights had been affected by bomb threats on Friday morning.
A Ryanair flight landed in Lisbon, Portugal at 8am after a bomb threat was made by phone to the authorities, Italian media has reported. A security operation was mounted as soon as the plane landed.
Separately, the control tower in Fiumicino, Italy, received an alert about a device aboard a Wizzair flight to Rome from Paris. The Wizzair flight was diverted to Venice where police were clearing the area around the plane.
