West Bengal native detained in Kalaburagi over suspected LeT links

Kalaburagi, Oct 18 (UNI) A West Bengal native was detained in Kalaburagi over suspected links with Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), following a joint operation by central intelligence agencies and local police.
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge said the government would formulate a standard operating procedure (SOP) for employee background verification across businesses following a series of suspected terror-link cases.
The suspect, identified as Mumtaz-ul-Malik, was allegedly in contact with social media accounts linked to LeT and is suspected of sharing sensitive information through messages, according to preliminary information.
Malik had reportedly been working with his brother at a jewellery workshop in Saraf Bazaar here for the past one-and-a-half years. Investigators are examining his mobile phones and other digital devices, as some data is suspected to have been deleted.
Kharge said preliminary reports received by the Internal Security Division indicated that two individuals were in contact with a terrorist outfit through social media. While Malik's contact with the outfit had been established during the investigation, the involvement of the second individual was yet to be ascertained, he said.
Describing it as the fifth or sixth such case reported recently, the Minister said both individuals were from outside Karnataka.
The latest detention comes a month after the arrest of 23-year-old Mohammed Sameer, a native of Uttar Pradesh who was working at a slaughterhouse in Kalaburagi. He was arrested over suspected links with terrorist organisations.
Investigators reportedly found images and videos allegedly associated with terrorist groups on Sameer's mobile phone, along with information indicating contact with individuals through foreign telephone numbers.
Kharge urged employers to conduct background checks before recruiting workers. However, he stressed that people from other States could not be prevented from coming to Karnataka for employment, as it was their constitutional right.
The government was prepared to assist employers in the verification process, he said.
Kharge said he would convene a meeting after the festival season with representatives of e-commerce platforms, delivery companies, logistics firms, factories and textile mills to formulate the proposed SOP.
The investigation into Malik's case is continuing, with police examining digital communications and other evidence to establish the nature and extent of the alleged links, he added.
