WHITATHON run raises awareness and funds for childhood eye cancer

Hyderabad, May 18 (UNI) The LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) successfully organised the seventh edition of its flagship ‘WHITATHON’ run on Sunday to raise awareness about Retinoblastoma, a rare and life-threatening eye cancer affecting children, and to generate funds for its treatment.
Held in observance of World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week (May 11–17), the 10K run was flagged off by Telangana Director General of Disaster Response and Fire Services, Y Nagi Reddy, at T-Works, Raidurgam.
Over 1,500 participants joined the run, which also included 5K and 3K segments flagged off by key sponsors.
Speaking at the event, Dr Swathi Kaliki, Ocular Oncologist at LVPEI, stressed the importance of early detection, citing symptoms like a white reflex in the eye, squint, red or swollen eyes, and enlarged eyeballs. “Early diagnosis can save not just the child’s eye but also their life,” she emphasized.
Nagi Reddy urged attendees to spread awareness within their communities, explaining how even a flash photograph showing a white eye reflex could indicate the disease and prompt timely medical intervention.
Dr Prashant Garg, Executive Chairman of LVPEI, and Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, Director of Apollo Cancer Hospital, reiterated the urgent need to educate parents and society about the risks of Retinoblastoma and the lifesaving impact of early treatment.
Funds raised from the event will help provide free treatment to underprivileged children and support ongoing research. To date, LVPEI has provided over 3,000 free treatments, saving lives in 90 per cent of cases—though only 45% retained vision due to late diagnosis.
