Women for trees campaign in Manipur

Imphal, June 23 (UNI) A tree plantation campaign “Women For Trees” continued with a Tree Plantation Programme held at Kabowakching, Nambol on Monday.
The programme saw enthusiastic participation from women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the aegis of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), along with local residents, who actively took part in planting saplings at designated locations near Kabowakching Makha Leikai Pukhri Achouba, where a Water Body Rejuvenation Project is being undertaken under AMRUT 2.0.

During the programme, the Chief Town Planner, Nongthombam Benju Singh and State Mission Director, AMRUT 2.0, highlighted the importance of community-led afforestation, women’s leadership in environmental conservation, and the broader impact of increased green cover on climate resilience.
He emphasized that women members of SHGs, under the framework of AMRUT Mitra, will take the lead in the plantation activities under the theme “Upal Ama Emagi Mingda”, a heartfelt tribute to mothers. He further urged participants to take care of the trees as they would their own mothers.

The Caretaker Chairperson of Nambol Municipality , Ch. Basanta Singh also encouraged and motivated SHG members to nurture the saplings with care and respect, contributing to the holistic development of the community. Under this campaign, SHG members will not only plant trees but
also maintain the saplings for at least two years to ensure their survivability.

The plantation drive witnessed the planting of approximately 170 saplings, reaffirming the community’s commitment to a greener and cleaner Nambol. All saplings were geo-tagged for effective monitoring every three months. This initiative marks a significant step in aligning with national efforts to expand urban green cover and promote sustainable development.
