Women observe fast as ‘Karwachauth’ celebrated with fervour in Jammu

Jammu, Oct 29 (UNI) Women observed a day-long fast as the festival of ‘Karwachauth’ was celebrated with fervour here today.
‘Karwachauth’ is a traditional festival celebrated particularly in North India, during which married women observe a fast for the long life of their husbands.
Women wake up in the early hours of the morning and have ‘sargi’ (a traditional pre-dawn meal) before sunrise.
They break their fast only after sighting the moon in the evening, with many observing the fast without even drinking water throughout the day.
Meanwhile, the winter capital wore a festive look as grocery stores, cosmetic shops and sweet shops witnessed a heavy rush of women folk.
Special ‘mehandi’ stalls were set up at busy locations across Jammu city and attracted a large number of women.
Women were also seen visiting shopping malls, cinemas and markets as part of the festive celebrations.
Women also appealed to the government to declare a holiday on ‘Karwachauth’ every year.
“The government should seriously consider declaring a holiday on this day, as it would be beneficial, especially for working women,” said a woman observing the fast.
In the evening, women performed special prayers and offered sweets and fruits to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati after sighting the moon.
Meanwhile, the ‘City of Temples’ witnessed a festive atmosphere amid the ongoing festive season.
Tight security arrangements were put in place across the city, while the Traffic Department also issued advisories to regulate vehicular movement.
