Working women in Telangana, AP increasingly considering egg freezing: Experts

Hyderabad, Oct 23 (UNI) A growing number of working women aged 30-35 in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are considering egg freezing to preserve their fertility and retain reproductive choices for the future, as career aspirations, financial independence and changing personal priorities influence family planning, experts said on Friday.
Addressing a workshop on “Rise in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in the Modern Era”, organised by Warangal-based Kakatiya Medical College, Dr Naresh Purohit, Advisor to the National Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Programme, said longer periods of education, demanding careers, financial responsibilities and the desire to find the right partner or time to start a family were prompting some women to explore fertility preservation.
Citing his recent scientific report published in the ‘International Journal of Fertility and Sterility’, he said egg freezing was increasingly being viewed as an option to preserve reproductive choices while women pursued their personal and professional goals.

He referred to an estimated 25 per cent annual increase in the number of Indian women opting for egg freezing over the past five years.
Dr Purohit, an executive member of the Federation of Reproductive Health Services India (FRHSI), said egg freezing was not merely an option for celebrities or high-profile professionals, but a medical and personal decision that could be considered by women in different circumstances.
“Egg freezing is not about following a trend, but about understanding whether fertility preservation is a suitable option for an individual,” he said, adding that women facing treatments such as chemotherapy or certain medical procedures that could affect ovarian function might also be advised to consider fertility preservation.
Explaining the procedure, he said egg freezing involved ovarian stimulation with medication, monitoring through blood tests and ultrasound examinations, and the retrieval of mature eggs through a medical procedure. The eggs were subsequently frozen using a technique known as vitrification, under medical supervision.
He cautioned that egg freezing did not guarantee a future pregnancy or live birth and that women should make informed decisions based on their age, reproductive health and future family plans rather than social or professional pressure.
“Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and both their quantity and quality decline with age. The decline becomes more noticeable during the 30s,” he said, explaining why some women considered freezing their eggs at a younger age, when the chances of successful future use could be better.
Experts said fertility preservation could be considered by women wishing to postpone pregnancy for personal, professional, financial or medical reasons. However, it was not necessary for every working woman, and individual circumstances needed to be assessed before making a decision.
A consultation with a fertility specialist could help women understand their ovarian reserve, age-related fertility changes, reproductive goals and realistic treatment outcomes, they said.
The success of using frozen eggs depended on several factors, including the woman's age when the eggs were frozen, the number and quality of eggs stored, and her reproductive health at the time of their future use, the experts added.
They said the growing interest in egg freezing reflected changing reproductive choices alongside careers, relationships and personal priorities. While the procedure could provide an additional option for future family planning, it should not be viewed as a guarantee of pregnancy.
Experts also noted that some men were opting to freeze their sperm because of health-related concerns or to preserve their future reproductive options.
