‘Goa’s Survival at Stake’: Venugopal Targets BJP Ahead of Goy Rakhonn Yatra

New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) Congress general secretary in-charge K C Venugopal on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Goa of putting the state’s land, environment, heritage and identity at risk, asserting that the Congress’s Goy Rakhonn Yatra beginning on September 22 would seek to mobilise people to “protect Goa from the BJP”.
Venugopal alleged that nearly 1 crore sq.m. of land had been taken away from Goans over the past decade and handed over to builders and industrialists 'close to the BJP'. “We are seeing a wholesale auction of every inch of Goan land,” he said in a sttement, accusing the ruling party of allowing the state’s resources and identity to be eroded.
He also targeted the BJP government over law and order, women’s safety, corruption, unemployment and inflation, alleging that Goa had witnessed an “unprecedented rise in crime, violence, rapes, and day-to-day corruption”.
“The ordinary Goan is facing the double brunt of unemployment and massive inflation,” Venugopal said, charging the BJP with resorting to “political sabotage and unconstitutional purchase of MLAs” to keep its government in power.
Venugopal said the Congress believed Goa had reached a critical point, describing the situation as a “now-or-never moment for this great state's survival”.
“The Congress, to protect Goa from the ills that have befallen it, is embarking on the Goy Rakkhonn Yatra, starting tomorrow!” he said, appealing to people to support what he described as a “people's movement to protect Goa from the BJP”.
The yatra, which the Congress has planned ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, is aimed at taking the party’s campaign across all 40 Assembly constituencies. The Congress has placed issues relating to land, environmental protection, Goan identity, heritage, unemployment, public safety and governance at the centre of the campaign.
The party has also indicated that it intends to broaden opposition unity in the state. AICC Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakare has said the Congress remains open to cooperation with other opposition parties and has reached out to forces including the Goa Forward Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party.
With the Goy Rakhonn Yatra, the Congress is seeking to turn concerns over land and development, environmental protection and governance into a wider political mobilisation against the BJP in Goa. UNI SKA MCR
