'Uninformed, unwarranted': MEA slams US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's comments on SIR

New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) India has slammed US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's criticism of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls as unwarranted, uninformed and tantamount to interfering in the country's electoral practices.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said:
"We find the remarks unwarranted and uninformed and tantamount to interfering in the electoral practices of a fellow democracy. This is an approach that undermines democracy itself."
His reaction came after Jayapal termed the deletion of names during the SIR process as an effort to "purge 130 million people from the voting rolls."
In a series of posts shared on social media on Thursday, October 15, the Democratic lawmaker from Washington State drew comparisons between the voting rights strategies in the US and India.
Jayapal alleged that the SIR exercise resembled the Trump administration's attempts to undermine voting rights in the US.
She said protecting democracies worldwide was essential and that people in India, like those in the US, deserved free and fair elections.
She also expressed solidarity with non-violent protesters.
