AdaniConneX’s Vizag Data Centres to use for air cooling, limit Freshwater consumption

Visakhapatnam, Oct 18 (UNI) AdaniConneX’s proposed data centre campuses in Visakhapatnam, being developed in partnership with Google, will use air-based cooling technology to avoid water-intensive evaporative cooling systems and limit freshwater consumption across three sites to less than the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, according to project details.
The proposed campuses at Mudasarlova and Tarluvada form part of a planned data centre development with a capacity of around one gigawatt, as Visakhapatnam seeks to emerge as a major hub for artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, the company said in a release on Sunday.
Unlike conventional data centres that rely on cooling towers and evaporative systems, the proposed facilities will use air-cooled technology, significantly reducing their dependence on freshwater, sources familiar with the project said.
Around 80 per cent of the limited freshwater required across the three sites will be used for landscaping, kitchens and worker facilities. Water will be recycled and reused on-site, they said.
The facilities will have dedicated industrial water connections instead of drawing supplies from municipal lines, a measure intended to avoid competition with households for drinking water.
The campuses will also follow a zero-discharge policy for domestic wastewater. Wastewater will be treated at an on-site sewage treatment plant and reused for landscaping and toilet flushing, with no treated wastewater discharged into the Mudasarlova Reservoir, the sources said.
The proposed measures are aimed at reducing the project’s impact on local water resources, including the Mudasarlova Reservoir and the adjoining Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary.
The project has drawn scrutiny from environmental activists over its proximity to the reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Visakhapatnam, and the nearby wildlife sanctuary.
Concerns have also been raised over environmental assessments and the disclosure of the facilities’ operational water requirements.
The Andhra Pradesh government has defended the proposed data centre development, with IT Minister Nara Lokesh dismissing concerns about its resource requirements as misinformation.
The government has said that an expanded data centre ecosystem with a capacity of 6.5 gigawatts could require around three thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water annually. Google has said it plans to use advanced air-cooling technology.
Visakhapatnam is attracting investments in data centres and supporting digital infrastructure as demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence services grows.
Reliance Industries is developing a data centre campus near Bhogapuram and Polipalli, while Bharti Airtel is investing in terrestrial and metropolitan fibre networks and undersea cable landing infrastructure at Rambilli.
Data centres house computing equipment used to store, process and transmit digital information. Their substantial cooling and energy requirements have intensified scrutiny of their potential impact on water resources, particularly in water-stressed areas and near ecologically sensitive locations.
The choice of cooling technology, use of recycled wastewater and access to dedicated industrial water supplies have consequently emerged as key considerations as Andhra Pradesh seeks to attract large-scale digital infrastructure investments.
AdaniConneX, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and US-based EdgeConneX, is developing a network of hyperscale data centres to meet growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other digital services.
The proposed Visakhapatnam campuses are expected to strengthen the city’s digital infrastructure and support its emergence as a major data centre hub, the sources added.
