Bhambri’s injury leads to India’s Davis Cup doubles shake-up

Seoul, Sep 15 (UNI) India suffered a big blow after their top doubles player Yuki Bhambri was ruled out with a thigh injury ahead of its second round Davis Cup 2026 qualifier against the Republic of Korea on September 18 and 19.

“Yuki Bambri is not doing too well with his thigh,” India captain Rohit Rajpal said. “So, we are working on that area to see what our combination is going to be, which we shouldn't be doing actually during the week before the Davis Cup. But unfortunately, we are having to do that."

Bhambri, 44th in the men’s doubles rankings, suffered a right thigh strain prior to his opening US Open match in the main draw, according to olympics.com.

His participation has since been a doubt for the South Korea tie, which will be played on the hard courts of the Olympic Tennis Centre in Seoul.
Bhambri’s absence will force India to rejig its doubles plans. His combination with Dhakshineswar Suresh helped India beat the Netherlands in the previous round, but with Bhambri now sidelined by injury, India will have to look at other options.
Olympian N Sriram Balaji is the most likely replacement for Bhambri and is currently 49th in the men’s doubles tennis rankings.
Niki Poonacha, who has won six ATP Challenger doubles crowns this year, and Anirudh Chandrasekar are the other Indian tennis players in the fray.
Bhambri, N Sriram Balaji and Anirudh Chandrasekar are also all part of India’s tennis squad for Asian Games 2026.

The upcoming Davis Cup tie against South Korea will be the first time India are playing in the second round of the qualifiers since the current format was introduced in 2019.

India have finished as Davis Cup runners-up three times, in 1966, 1974 and 1987. The winner of the Seoul tie will advance to the Final 8 in November.
