CJP gives Delhi Police 24-hour ultimatum to fix date for Jantar Mantar protest against CEC

New Delhi, Oct 12 (UNI) The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday gave the Delhi Police 24 hours to respond to its request for a date to hold a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and co-convenor Saurav Das visited the Parliament Street police station to seek permission for the proposed protest, leaving it to the police to determine when the demonstration could be held.
The party said it would mobilise protesters within 24 hours if the authorities designated a date and time.
“We are asking the Delhi Police when we can hold a protest at Jantar Mantar. We hope the police will give us a date. If they do, we will gather within 24 hours to protest at the designated protest site,” Ranka told reporters outside the police station.
Security was tightened in the area ahead of their arrival, with the road outside the police station closed to traffic.
A public announcement urged people to follow security restrictions and prohibitory orders, maintain peace and refrain from unauthorised gatherings.
Questioning the extensive security arrangements in the national capital, Ranka said the restrictions were inconveniencing residents and affecting commercial activity, particularly with festivals approaching.
“The way Delhi Police has shut the entire national capital down is unprecedented. People are suffering, businesses have been shut... festivals are also coming. Why don't you give us
a designated site to hold the protest?” he asked.
Das maintained that peaceful demonstrations were a constitutional right and said the party had addressed the police's concerns about advance notice by asking the authorities themselves to
propose a suitable date.
“Peaceful protest is a right, a constitutional right, and people are already exercising it. People will protest peacefully. The police always complain that we should approach them 10 days in advance. We are now leaving the choice to them and asking them to specify the date and time,” Das said.
He, however, cautioned that the party would not allow its request to remain unresolved indefinitely. “We will give them a 24-hour ultimatum. Let's see,” he added.
The latest move comes amid the CJP's continuing campaign against CEC Kumar and follows the detention of protesters during demonstrations over the SIR process.
The party has accused the authorities of obstructing peaceful political mobilisation and preventing demonstrators from reaching designated protest venues.
The CJP has maintained that its proposed demonstration is intended to raise objections to alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process. The party's demand for a police-designated date now places the next step with the Delhi Police, even as it has warned that it will renew its call for protest if no response is received within the stipulated 24 hours.
