CM Khemchand Singh conferred Grand Master 9th Dan; First Manipur State Poomsae Taekwondo Championship begins

Imphal, Oct 21 (UNI) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh was conferred the prestigious Grand Master 9th Dan by the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation (GTTF) today during the inaugural ceremony of the 1st Manipur State Poomsae Taekwondo Championship 2026 at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium, Imphal.
GTTF President Grand Master Jun Lee of the Republic of Korea presented the title to the Chief Minister, recognising his longstanding association with and contribution to the martial art.
The ceremony also witnessed Singh demonstrating his martial arts skills and reflexes, reflecting his years of dedication and experience in Taekwondo.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the championship, organised with the participation of a delegation led by GTTF President Jun Lee, would help elevate Manipur's Taekwondo practitioners to the international level.
He expressed hope that the event would promote the growth and development of the discipline in the state and inspire young athletes to achieve greater heights.
Lauding the Chief Minister, Jun Lee described him as one of India's outstanding Taekwondo practitioners of the early 1980s. He said Singh had won the national championship multiple times and was among the pioneering figures who helped popularise Taekwondo in India.
Lee added that while many people knew Singh as a political leader, he had established himself as a Taekwondo champion long before entering politics and continued to remain deeply connected to the sport.
Manipur Minister for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs and Sports Govindas Konthoujam said the state possessed abundant sporting talent across various disciplines.
He expressed confidence that the Poomsae Taekwondo Championship would lay the foundation for a stronger and more inclusive Taekwondo movement in Manipur.
The minister also called for fostering a sporting culture based on discipline, equal opportunities and recognition of talent and determination among young people. He urged the youth to reject violence and contribute to building a peaceful society through sports.
The inaugural programme featured a demonstration of Thang-Ta, the traditional martial art of Manipur, presented by the Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association. Students from Shinhan University, South Korea, also delivered a performance that added an international dimension to the event.
The 31-member GTTF delegation, which is visiting Manipur from October 19 to 24, includes Hwang Kyung-Seon, a three-time Olympic medallist.
The event was attended by MLAs, senior administrative officers, officials of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department, coaches, students and parents, among others.
The championship is expected to provide a platform for local athletes to showcase their skills, strengthen international sporting ties and promote Taekwondo among the youth of Manipur.
