CPI(M) hails Nithya Raman’s LA victory, calls it setback for Trump’s Far-Right politics

New Delhi, Nov 6 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today hailed Nithya Raman’s historic victory in the Los Angeles mayoral election, describing it as a significant breakthrough for Indian-origin representation in American politics and a reflection of growing support for progressive politics over right-wing and divisive ideologies.
CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby congratulated Raman on her victory as the first Indian-origin mayor of Los Angeles, saying the electoral outcome carried a wider political significance beyond the city.
“Congratulations to Nithya Raman on her historic victory as the first Indian-origin mayor of Los Angeles,” Baby said in a post on the social media platform X.
Pointing to the political significance of the outcome, Baby observed that with Raman assuming office, the mayors of the two most populous cities in the United States, would be self-described socialists.
He said the mandate reflected popular support for progressive policies and people-oriented governance, with greater emphasis on public services such as housing, healthcare, transportation and infrastructure rather than corporate interests.
Describing Raman’s victory as a political setback for the right wing, Baby said it represented “a firm rebuff to the far-right, xenophobic politics of Donald Trump and his ilk”.
The CPI(M) leader placed the Los Angeles election result in the context of a broader international political trend, arguing that voters were increasingly asserting their preference for inclusive governance, social welfare and public accountability over divisive and exclusionary politics.
Raman’s victory also marks a milestone for the Indian-origin community in the United States, bringing an Indian-origin political figure to the mayoral office of one of the country's largest and most influential cities. UNI SKA SS
