Delhi govt orders crackdown on encroachments adding to traffic, pollution

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) The Delhi government has directed agencies to step up action against illegal encroachments on roads and public spaces, saying such obstructions contribute to traffic congestion and air pollution by slowing vehicular movement and increasing idling, officials said on Saturday.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa issued the directions during review meetings for East, North-East, South-East and South districts as part of the government’s preparations for the winter pollution season, the department said in a statement.
The minister asked district administrations to identify pollution hotspots using data from AQI monitoring stations and prepare area-specific action plans. Officials will identify sources such as road dust, traffic congestion, vehicular emissions, construction and demolition activities, unauthorised parking and waste burning.
Sirsa directed concerned agencies to remove unauthorised encroachments from roads and public spaces to improve traffic flow. Particular attention was given to areas where encroachments or illegal parking lead to congestion and prolonged movement of vehicles.
The government also ordered stronger enforcement against unauthorised parking of buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles. Cranes will be deployed wherever required to remove or tow such vehicles, particularly from traffic-sensitive locations.
At Anand Vihar Bus Terminal, officials were directed to intensify action against unauthorised parking of buses and heavy vehicles. In Patparganj Industrial Area, agencies were asked to maintain dust-control measures, especially at locations where road or allied works are underway.
The minister also directed agencies to enforce dust-control norms at construction and demolition sites and take action against violations. Pending road works, including pothole repairs and treatment of brown areas, have been prioritised for completion by October 31, wherever feasible.
The department said agencies will submit action-taken reports within 15 days. Ground teams have also been asked to maintain regular checks at vulnerable locations and take immediate action against violations.
“Our approach is clear — pollution sources must be identified, and action must be taken where pollution is generated,” Sirsa said.
