Germany could become involved in 'violent conflict with Russia' says BND chief Martin Jaeger

Berlin, Oct 5 (UNI) Germany could potentially become "embroiled in a violent conflict with Russia", the country's foreign intelligence chief has warned, describing an alleged drone incident at Leipzig airport as an example of what he called the growing threat from Moscow.
Speaking at a parliamentary hearing on Monday, Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND – German foreign intelligence) chief Martin Jaeger said the confrontation with Russia had entered "a new, more dangerous dimension".
"Germany is in danger of becoming embroiled in a violent conflict with Russia – the attempted attack in Leipzig is just one example," Jaeger said, referring to the discovery in August of a drone carrying explosives near a Ukrainian transport aircraft at the city's airport.
German authorities have not released evidence publicly linking Russia to the incident. Moscow has rejected the allegation, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov describing it as a "hastily cobbled-together provocation" and accusing Berlin of pursuing further escalation.
Jaeger nevertheless accused Russia of conducting what he called a "shadow war" and said there was a "real and imminent" threat of attacks against targets in Germany.
"No other country currently poses such a direct, comprehensive, and concrete threat to Germany," he said.
Jaeger was joined at Monday's hearing by Martina Rosenberg, head of Germany's Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD), and Sinan Selen, head of the domestic intelligence agency BfV. The three officials supported recent efforts by Chancellor Friedrich Merz to give the BND greater powers to conduct offensive operations and called for stronger capabilities for the MAD and BfV.
Rosenberg said Germany faced "diverse dangers from both outside and within".
Merz has also described the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), the country's most popular party according to some recent polls, as "Russia-backed", although Moscow has rejected such accusations as baseless and unfounded.
European leaders have repeatedly said they do not believe Russia is preparing an attack on NATO territory. Jaeger also said the BND had seen "no indication of an imminent large-scale Russian attack on NATO territory".
The German intelligence chief's comments come amid wider accusations from European governments that Russia is conducting a campaign of sabotage, espionage and other forms of "hybrid" or "shadow" warfare against European states.
Moscow has rejected such allegations, calling them a ruse to justify Europe's greater military spending and deeper Western involvement in the Ukraine war, as well as to divert the attention of the masses from the ongoing problems by stoking paranoia.
