Haryana hikes honorarium of senior citizens' tribunal members fourfold to Rs 2,000 per sitting

Panchkula, Oct 22 (UNI) The Haryana government has increased the honorarium of non-official members of Maintenance and Appellate Tribunals for senior citizens fourfold, from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 per meeting, with effect from October 15, 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Social Justice, Empowerment, Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes and Antyodaya (SEWA) Department and published in the Haryana Government's Extraordinary Gazette on October 21, the revised rates will apply to non-official members serving on tribunals constituted under the Haryana Maintenance of Parents and Senior Citizens Rules, 2009.
The revision marks a 300 per cent increase in the honorarium, which had remained unchanged since July 21, 2017. Eligible members will now receive an additional Rs 1,500 per meeting.
The tribunals function under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which provides a legal mechanism for parents and senior citizens to seek maintenance from children or relatives legally responsible for their support.
The notification states that non-official members and conciliation officers are entitled to travelling allowance, meeting allowance, honorarium or remuneration at rates determined by the state government from time to time. The latest revision specifically covers the honorarium of non-official tribunal members.
The government has directed that expenditure arising from the revised honorarium will be met from the designated budget head for the operation of Maintenance and Appellate Tribunals for Senior Citizens under the SEWA Department.

Pinjore's medieval water heritage springs back to life as ancient baolis are rescued from oblivion

22 Oct 2026 | 8:58 AM

Panchkula, Oct 22 (UNI) Long before concrete dams and canal networks dominated the landscape, the Aravalli foothills of Haryana were watered by a quieter, more ingenious architecture: the baoli. These medieval stepwells, tiered stone structures that descended into the earth to tap hidden aquifers, were once the lifeline of the region, blending utilitarian water harvesting with extraordinary craftsmanship. Today, centuries after many fell into disuse and disrepair, Panchkula's Pinjore block is witnessing a rare resurrection of this forgotten heritage.
