Hatebreed – 'Fatal Paradox' review: A dark and furious celebration of the last 30 years!

By Anand Venkitachalam
New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) American metalcore juggernaughts Hatebreed are back with their latest album ‘Fatal Paradox’, showing everyone once again why they are one of the best in the business.
Six years after the band’s ‘Weight of the False Self’ not much has changed, as their ninth album, ‘Fatal Paradox’ is just exactly what one would expect from Hatebreed.
A simple mean machine, it’s heavy, anthemic, and very powerful -- ranging from its crushing metal riffs to awesome hardcore breakdowns.
Ranging from the energy of ‘Kill Count Increase’ to the more groovy nature of the title track, there is very little that is wrong with ‘Fatal Paradox’.
Just 35 minutes in length with most tracks under three minutes, save for ‘None Left to Save’ which is surprisingly over six and a half minutes, and a merciless cover of Corrosion of Conformity’s ‘Poison Planet’.
Hatebreed is the best definition of metalcore as they embody aspects of both heavy metal and hardcore punk, blending both seamlessly in a power packed product.
Musically there is nothing much to say, though it seems that the band has pretty much embraced thrash metal completely in favour of the more crossover style riffs they had earlier: the drums pack a massive punch, the bass isn’t the centerpiece but it works.
The whole album, much like all other Hatebreed albums is just one collect-athon of furious riffs that just scream power and energy. Probably the heaviest album in their history.
Songs like ‘Sacrifice Season’ just scream metal, the vocals in all the albums seem delivered with a sense of urgency, which really fuels the nitrous-laden hardcore breakdowns on this. They are not the most spectacular thing to exist, but they work perfectly for what Hatebreed wants to accomplish.
It is very evident on tracks like ‘The Carrion Choir’ and ‘Make the Demons Obey’, just how any other style of vocal delivery would do total injustice to this album, or what it goes for.
This is just the perfect album for a moshpit and pure headbanging -- an unapologetic celebration of the band’s last 30 years as the band embraces both their hardcore and metal eras with intense anger and pure raw visceral intensity.
Rage and positive rhetoric has always been the central motif of Hatebreed, and while not abandoned here, the most surprising thing here might be the fact that this is the most negative album by the metalcore pioneers.
The earlier optimism of the group is dropped in favour of embracing a starkly more nihilistic and bleak tone, which it drives in quickly with the overall tone.
Though it doesn’t strive to musically reinvent the band or anything drastically different, Hatebreed knows what works and what doesn’t. And most decisions made here work really well.
There is no reprieve or mercy here: only rage, ferocity, and anger driven by a collection of fast and crushing heavy riffs with brutal breakdowns and screams! Score: 8/10
