Himachal: Polytechnic student to build state-of-the-art drones for Army; MoD approves Rs₹3.50 crore

Hamirpur(HP), Sep 22 (UNI) A shining example of talent at the grassroot level has emerged from Government Polytechnic College, Hamirpur (Baroo), where Sarvesh Sharma, a student at the college, has successfully developed a drone designed to solve a major challenge faced by the Indian Army; the drone is engineered to evade enemy radar detection and resist jamming attempts.
A grant of Rs₹3.50 crore has been approved for this project by the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) under the Ministry of Defence. Dinesh Mahaur, Additional Secretary and CEO of the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, granted approval for this budget on Monday.
This achievement by Sarvesh Sharma, who comes from an underprivileged background, has brought pride not only to his family and institution but to the entire state of Himachal Pradesh.
Sarvesh had participated in a national-level 'Open Cardboard Drone Competition' organized by IIT Jodhpur and the Konark Corps. Fifty teams from prestigious institutions across the country took part in the event, presenting their innovative ideas.
During the event, discussions were also held regarding challenges related to border surveillance faced by the Indian Army. Sarvesh's team secured the fourth prize, worth ₹10 lakh, in the competition. Inspired by this experience, Sarvesh began working on a drone to address the Army's challenge and successfully developed it. The project incurred a cost of ₹87,000. Subsequently, Sarvesh applied for a startup project under the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiatives, and his proposal has now been approved.
Sarvesh will now develop the 'Rudra Edge T-1 (Spectra)' drone for the Indian Army; this drone will prove invaluable for border surveillance, as it is designed to evade enemy radar detection and resist jamming attempts.
The Ministry of Defence has granted a 20-day window to complete the formalities for this project, and an incubation centre has been established at IIT Roorkee. Sarvesh will work on the project in the IIT Roorkee laboratory, with a target completion timeline of 20 months.
Congratulating him on this achievement, the Polytechnic College Principal Chandrashekhar, Head of the Computer Engineering Department Sameer Bharti, and other faculty members extended their best wishes for his bright future.
Sarvesh is an alumnus of Government Senior Secondary School, Bahanvi.
Sarvesh Sharma comes from a humble background; his father, Sanjeev Sharma, works as a daily wage labourer. Sarvesh completed his primary and secondary education at Government Senior Secondary School, Bahanvi.
