India-Canada CEPA talks accelerate, fifth round to begin on Oct 5: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) Negotiations between India and Canada for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are moving at a faster pace, with the fifth round of talks scheduled to begin on October 5, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday.
The development comes after the fourth round of negotiations concluded in India on September 18.
Both sides are now working towards completing the trade agreement by the end of this year as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
Goyal said the coming three months could be an important phase for India-Canada relations.
The decision to accelerate the negotiations follows discussions between the two countries and a recent visit by Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu to Mumbai, where he held talks with Goyal.
Bilateral trade between India and Canada stood at around $30.4 billion in 2025.
The two countries have set an ambitious target of increasing two-way trade to USD 70 billion by 2030.
India's key exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel products, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods and chemicals.
On the import side, India sources products such as pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertilisers, paper and crude petroleum from Canada.
Services are another important part of the bilateral economic relationship. India's services exports to Canada are led by telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services.
A CEPA could provide a broader framework for expanding market access in both goods and services while addressing trade and investment-related issues between the two countries.
Goyal also provided an update on India's trade agreement with the European Union.
He said the pact is expected to move towards implementation in the coming months.
"The agreement could be ratified by the European Parliament within the next three months, following which it may take effect within roughly six to seven months, subject to the required procedures," he said.
The minister also indicated progress in India's trade negotiations with Chile.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal recently visited Chile to review the status of the discussions.
"The government expects further developments on the India-Chile trade agreement in the coming months as negotiations continue," he added.
With India simultaneously advancing trade discussions with Canada, the EU and Chile, the government is seeking to expand market access for Indian businesses and deepen trade ties with major international markets. UNI VK SAS
