Karnataka Rakshana Vedike calls off protest after Sonu Nigam's apology

Bengaluru, Oct 19 (UNI) The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) has called off its planned protest against playback singer Sonu Nigam's Bengaluru concert after its state president T A Narayana Gowda said the singer had apologised for his earlier remarks that triggered a controversy over the Kannada language.
Narayana Gowda said Sonu Nigam spoke to him over the phone and acknowledged that his remarks had hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas. The singer had conveyed his willingness to tender an unconditional apology, he said in a social media post.
The KRV chief said the organisation had no personal animosity towards the singer, whose songs had long been appreciated by Kannadigas. However, the remarks concerning the Kannada language had hurt the community's sentiments, making it necessary for the organisation to register its protest.
The development comes days before Nigam's scheduled concert in Bengaluru on October 24. The KRV had earlier opposed the event and urged the police commissioner not to grant permission for the programme, warning of statewide protests if it went ahead.
The controversy dates back to a concert in Bengaluru in April 2025, when Nigam reacted to an audience member's demand for a Kannada song. His remarks, in which he referred to the Pahalgam terror attack, triggered widespread criticism from Kannada organisations and members of the public. An FIR was subsequently registered in connection with the controversy.
Narayana Gowda said accepting an apology was consistent with the spirit and culture of Kannadigas and announced that the organisation would end its agitation in view of the latest development.
He also expressed the hope that Nigam would continue contributing to Kannada film music and perform in Karnataka in the future, adding that music should help foster goodwill and mutual respect.
The KRV's decision marks a significant easing of the stand-off over the singer's upcoming concert, following weeks of renewed tensions over the remarks.
