Nearly two million people issued evacuation orders in Japan as Typhoon Dujuan brings forth torrential rains

Tokyo, Sep 21 (UNI) Almost two million people were under evacuation orders in Japan on Monday as Typhoon Dujuan battered several prefectures, bringing torrential rain, strong winds, flooding and landslide risks.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) had warned of an “imminent threat to life”, although several alerts were later downgraded. The highest-level warning remained in force in Oshima Town in the Izu Islands, while level four warnings for heavy rain, flooding and landslides continued in several other areas.
Dujuan brought sustained winds of around 130km/h and gusts of up to 194km/h. More than 50,000 households were without power, while hundreds of flights were cancelled and some rail services suspended.
The storm was the 25th typhoon of the year and moved along Japan’s Pacific coast as the country marked the Silver Week holiday period. The JMA warned that the Kanto region and Izu Islands in particular could see more heavy rain, violent winds, high waves and landslides.
The storm also disrupted major events, with concerts scheduled for Monday at the Rock in Japan festival being cancelled, while the Tokyo Game Show called off its Monday programme.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also delayed her planned journey to the US to monitor the impact of the storm. She had been due to travel to New York for the UN General Assembly and meet US President Donald Trump.
The Yokosuka City Fire Department told the BBC that a woman in her 60s was believed to have been swept away and buried after a landslide hit her home. In nearby Chiba prefecture, a man in his 50s was rescued after becoming trapped while clearing debris at a landslide site. He fell into a bamboo thicket along with heavy machinery and was taken to hospital.
Firefighters in Kanagawa also received a report from a man who said his house had been crushed by a landslide.
The storm brought exceptionally heavy rainfall to parts of eastern Japan. More than 672mm of rain was recorded over 24 hours on Izu Oshima, while the Sakahata area of Kimitsu in Chiba received 324mm.
Dujuan is the latest in a series of Pacific storms during a strong El Nino period. Warmer ocean temperatures can provide storms with more energy, while a warmer atmosphere can hold greater amounts of moisture, potentially resulting in heavier rainfall.
Climate change is not considered to be increasing the overall number of tropical cyclones globally and could reduce their frequency in some regions.
However, the storms that do form are expected to become more intense on average as the oceans and atmosphere warm
El Nino does not have a clear effect on the total number of typhoons but can influence where they form, their strength and the areas they affect. Some El Nino events can expose Japan to stronger storms.
Dujuan continued moving north-east along the Pacific coast as authorities warned that the full extent of the damage might not be known for some time.
