Netanyahu dismisses suggestion by IDF chief to end army's Hebron operation

Jerusalem, Oct 26 (UNI) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly rejected a recommendation from the IDF Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir to end the military operation in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, despite the army chief's assessment that its objectives had been met.
Israel's Kan public broadcaster reported that the military had wanted to announce the operation's conclusion as early as Saturday night, after completing a day of house searches. Netanyahu, however, insisted that the raid continue ahead of Tuesday's election.
Around 3,000 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes in the Hebron area since the operation began following a shooting attack by Palestinian gunmen at a checkpoint that killed two Israeli soldiers.
During a security assessment with senior military officials at Tel Nof air base on Sunday, Zamir reportedly argued that there was no operational justification for continuing the raid, and no legal basis for continuing to prevent Palestinians from returning to their homes, according to Kan.
A military source told the broadcaster that the operation's stated objectives -establishing deterrence, locating what Israel describes as terrorist infrastructure and gathering intelligence - had been achieved. Troops had searched 500 structures in the city but seized only two guns, the source said.
Several soldiers taking part in the operation also questioned its continued purpose in interviews with Kan.
"We're just sitting at these locations doing nothing. We conducted searches, looked for weaponry and found what there was to find," one soldier was quoted as saying.
"Right now, we're just wasting time," the soldier added.
"You can always find another handgun or another Hamas flag, but that's not the objective. There are soldiers here who haven't been home for 28 days, simply because someone doesn't want to admit that the operation has ended," the soldier said.
