Netanyahu pushing for fresh attacks against Iran despite approaching elections

Jerusalem, Oct 26 (UNI) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pushed for fresh attacks on Iran, but US officials have urged him to wait until the Trump administration is ready to carry out joint military operations, according to CNN, citing two US officials and an Israeli security source.
“Netanyahu really wanted and tried to convince Trump for a joint attack in Iran before the elections, and Trump did not give a green light,” the Israeli source told CNN. Netanyahu’s office dismissed the report as “fake news”.
The source said one factor behind US President Donald Trump’s decision was a warning from IDF chief of staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir to US General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Zamir reportedly cautioned that an attack could affect Israel’s elections and lead to their postponement.
Israel’s Channel 12 News reported on Sunday that Zamir and Netanyahu had a rare confrontation less than 48 hours before Tuesday’s vote. According to the report, Zamir received an instruction from the political leadership concerning Iran but sought a detailed discussion and legal authorisation before acting, fearing the operation could trigger a miscalculation and an immediate conflict.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz called that report “completely baseless and false”.
Israel had been preparing for possible further strikes on Iran over the preceding week and lobbying Washington to support and complement the operations, another source briefed on the matter told CNN. However, senior US officials, including Trump, asked Israel to hold back while signalling that joint operations could take place later.
The sources said Israel appeared to have postponed additional strikes in the immediate term while preparing for potential coordinated action with the US, likely after the American midterm elections.
Israel’s need for US assistance with missile defence was another factor in agreeing to delay, the source said. Iran and Yemen’s Houthi rebels would likely retaliate against fresh attacks, while Israel’s defensive munitions have been strained during the war.
Recent US intelligence assessments also suggest that Netanyahu and his allies lack a clearly defined strategic objective beyond demonstrating “progress” and continuing to weaken Iran’s governing system, one source familiar with the assessments told CNN.
Netanyahu said this week, during a speech at an IDF graduation ceremony, that he had instructed the military, Mossad and other security agencies to topple the Iranian regime.
“The plans are ready, waiting for Trump’s approval, could be after the midterms,” the source told CNN.
