Pakistan says it's acting as 'honest broker' in mediation between US and Iran

Islamabad, Oct 9 (UNI) Pakistan military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said Islamabad is acting as an 'honest broker' in its mediation between the US and Iran and remains committed to a negotiated and peaceful resolution of the war.
The Director General of the country's military media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) made the remarks in an interview with CNN correspondent Ivan Watson, who shared a clip on X.
Asked whether Pakistan could remain neutral after Iran's attacks on Saudi Arabia, given Islamabad's defence alliance with Riyadh and the Houthis' attacks on the kingdom, Chaudhry defended Pakistan's approach.
"Pakistan has been exhibiting that we are a very honest broker … everything stems from honesty. We have been very clear on where Pakistan stands with all our partners," he said.
Chaudhry said Pakistan had openly condemned Israeli attacks on Iran when the war began, while also condemning Iran's retaliatory strikes across the Gulf.
"We don't mince our words; we have a stake in regional peace and stability. We tell all that nobody benefits from expanding this war," he said, adding that Islamabad was doing "whatever is possible, whatever is necessary so that the gap narrows".
"We want that the conflict should not expand horizontally or vertically," he said.
In a separate clip released on Wednesday, Chaudhry confirmed that Pakistani troops were deployed in Saudi Arabia and had been present in the kingdom "for decades", operating across multiple domains.
In a longer interview clip posted by state-run Pakistan Television on Friday, he said the implementation of the Makkah defence pact and the deployment of forces would be strictly defensive.
"How that will be done, which component will go there, how it will be employed, that's for the operational commander to decide," he said, maintaining that countries involved in a military conflict do not disclose operational details publicly.
"So how and when they will be employed, you will see [for] yourself," he said, reiterating that any deployment would be "defensive in nature".
Chaudhry said all countries had the right to self-defence under the UN Charter and argued that collective deterrence could prevent threats from escalating into military confrontations.
He said Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye had significant military and diplomatic capabilities, adding that a potential aggressor would have to think carefully before attacking any of the signatories.
The remarks come amid escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and the continuing US-Israeli war against Iran, with Islamabad seeking to mediate between Washington and Tehran.
The defence pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, signed on August 7, aims to strengthen collective deterrence and provides for an attack on one signatory to be treated as an attack on all.
On Monday, the three countries agreed to the rapid deployment of military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia during an emergency meeting of the alliance in Riyadh.
