PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh relief for Kolkata stampede victims’ families

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each person killed in the stampede in Kolkata, while those injured in the tragedy will receive Rs 50,000 each.
Expressing deep distress over the incident, Modi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said, “The stampede in Kolkata is extremely distressing. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest.”
He added that the local administration was providing all possible assistance to those affected by the tragedy.
The financial assistance announced by the Prime Minister is intended to provide immediate relief to the families of the deceased and those injured in the incident. The announcement came amid concern over the loss of lives and injuries caused by the stampede following the collapse of a puja pandal.
The tragedy has once again brought into focus the challenges of crowd management and public safety at large religious and festive gatherings. Such incidents raise questions about the structural safety of temporary installations, crowd movement, access and exit arrangements, emergency medical facilities and coordination among the agencies responsible for ensuring public safety.
The immediate priority remains providing medical treatment to the injured, extending assistance to the affected families and ensuring that all necessary support reaches those impacted by the incident.
A detailed account of the circumstances leading to the stampede, including the sequence of events and the factors that contributed to the collapse of the puja pandal, would be necessary to establish how the tragedy unfolded and whether any lapses in safety arrangements occurred.
The Prime Minister’s announcement of ex-gratia assistance provides financial support to the families who have lost their loved ones and to those recovering from their injuries. The focus now remains on relief and rehabilitation for the affected people, alongside efforts to establish the circumstances that led to the tragedy. UNI SKA SS
