Rekha Gupta directs officials to ensure cleanliness, proper lighting across Delhi during festive season

New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday directed officials to ensure cleanliness, adequate lighting and proper maintenance of public spaces across the national capital during the festive season, warning that negligence would not be tolerated.
She also ordered the removal of unauthorised posters and banners and directed authorities to register FIRs against those responsible under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, the Chief Minister instructed officials of government departments and civic agencies to intensify sanitation work ahead of Diwali, remove garbage and construction debris from roads and public places, and conduct regular field inspections to ensure compliance.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that people experience cleanliness and better facilities everywhere, from their homes and markets to roads, parks and public spaces. All departments must work with full commitment and address any shortcomings immediately. Delhi residents should not have to face garbage, darkness or disorder during the festive season. Negligence at any level will not be tolerated,” Gupta said.
She directed officials to ensure regular cleaning of roads, intersections, flyovers, markets, residential areas and other public spaces, besides undertaking daily cleanliness drives and taking measures to control road dust.
Emphasising the need for accountability, Gupta asked senior officials to inspect their respective areas personally and take immediate corrective measures wherever shortcomings were found. She said issuing instructions was not enough and officials must monitor their implementation on the ground.
The Chief Minister also said staff shortages should not impede the cleanliness and beautification drive, adding that the government would take steps to provide the required manpower.
Departments, however, must fulfil their responsibilities and expedite the work, she said.
Expressing displeasure over unauthorised posters and banners on public property, Gupta directed agencies to remove them from roads, intersections, flyovers, pillars, government buildings and markets. She instructed officials to initiate legal action, including registration of FIRs wherever applicable, against those responsible for defacement.
She further directed all government offices, hospitals and schools to undertake special cleanliness drives before Diwali. Waste, debris and unnecessary materials accumulated in rooms, storerooms and other premises must be cleared, while obsolete official records should be disposed of in accordance with prescribed rules.
The Chief Minister warned that the exercise should not be treated as a formality and asked departments to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.
Officials would be held accountable if post-Diwali inspections revealed accumulated waste, disorder or negligence in maintaining cleanliness, she said.
Gupta also stressed the need to improve the upkeep of parks and public toilets and ensure adequate lighting at identified dark spots. She directed civic agencies to coordinate with one another and address deficiencies without delay, making it clear that no department could avoid responsibility for public facilities by citing another agency's jurisdiction.
