South African Indian-origin jurist Navi Pillay wins Nobel Peace Prize 2026 for work in international law

Stockholm, Oct 9 (UNI) South African Indian-origin jurist Navanethem "Navi" Pillay has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work to advance international law and promote peace.
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announced the award on Friday, and highlighted Pillay's contribution to broadening the influence of international law and developing a more comprehensive global legal order.
"She has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law and has led the way to a more comprehensive global legal order," said Frydnes. He also went on to praise her long career.
"At a time when the number of wars and conflicts is rising, and when judges and institutions of international law are under political attack, the Nobel Committee wishes to issue a reminder that the ability to resolve conflicts without force or violence is dependent on the international rule of law," the Nobel Committee said in a release announcing Pillay's victory.
Pillay, 85, was born in Durban, South Africa, on September 23, 1941, to a family of Indian-origin migrants of Tamil descent. Raised under apartheid, she grew up with seven siblings. Her father, Narrainsamy Naidoo, worked as a bus driver, while her mother, Santhama Naidoo, cared for the family.
Despite heavy financial constraints and racial discrimination, her parents placed considerable importance on education and equal opportunities for their children.
She entered legal practice in 1967, opening her own law firm in South Africa's Natal province. She became the first woman to establish a law practice in the province and represented activists opposing apartheid. In 1995, she was appointed to South Africa's High Court, becoming the first non-white woman to serve on the court.
Four years later, Pillay joined the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, eventually becoming its president. Her work there helped establish legal precedents recognising that rape and other forms of sexual violence could constitute genocide and crimes against humanity.
She later served as a judge at the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2012 and later became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, a position she held from 2008 to 2014.
She has also served as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar over alleged violations of the Genocide Convention.
From 2021 to 2025, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.
