Tanay powers Hyd to 267-run win; big victories across Ranji Trophy

Hyderabad, Oct 21 (UNI) Left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan produced a match-winning performance with 11 wickets as Hyderabad crushed Andhra by 267 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 second round, headlining a day of emphatic victories and thrilling finishes across the country on Wednesday.
Tanay, who also won the Player of the Match award in Hyderabad’s previous game against Tripura, continued his impressive run with another commanding display. He claimed six wickets in Andhra’s second innings as the hosts were bowled out for 130 while chasing a daunting target of 398.
Hyderabad had scored 275 in their first innings before declaring their second innings at 306 for seven. Andhra, who managed 184 in their first innings, struggled to withstand the visitors’ bowling attack in the final innings as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Tanay’s ability to break partnerships and maintain pressure proved decisive, helping Hyderabad seal a comprehensive victory and consolidate their position in the competition. His consecutive Player of the Match awards underline his growing importance to the side’s campaign.
In one of the closest finishes of the round, Meghalaya edged Manipur by three runs in a thrilling Plate Group encounter in Shillong. Manipur came close to chasing down the target, with Rajkumar Singh scoring 51, but the innings ended when Abhishek Kumar claimed the final wicket to secure a dramatic victory for Meghalaya.
Punjab also registered a comfortable win, defeating Chhattisgarh by seven wickets after chasing a modest target of 86. Chhattisgarh were bowled out for 335 in their second innings, setting Punjab a target of 86 after the latter had made 456 in the first innings. Punjab completed the chase inside 17 overs despite losing three wickets.
In the Karnataka-Saurashtra contest, the match ended in a draw, with Saurashtra securing three points on the basis of a first-innings lead. Karnataka declared their second innings at 243 for seven, setting Saurashtra a target of 237 in 49 overs. The visitors finished at 137 for two in 42 overs, choosing to avoid unnecessary risks and preserve their points advantage.
Several teams recorded commanding victories in other Elite Group matches. Assam defeated Tripura by nine wickets, while Tamil Nadu beat Uttarakhand by an innings and 66 runs. Haryana overcame Chandigarh by an innings and 24 runs, and Bengal defeated Services by 60 runs.
Vidarbha edged Jammu and Kashmir by three wickets in a closely fought contest, while Uttar Pradesh defeated Goa by 68 runs. Baroda registered a 10-wicket victory over Bihar, and Kerala beat Odisha by an innings and 36 runs after Jalaj Saxena's five-wicket haul helped dismantle the Odisha batting line-up.
Mumbai produced another dominant performance, defeating Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 97 runs. After posting 528 for eight declared in their first innings, Mumbai bowled out Himachal Pradesh for 140 before dismissing them for 291 in the second innings.
Delhi drew with Gujarat after securing a first-innings lead of 169 runs. Delhi had declared at 648 for six, while Gujarat responded with 479. Delhi earned three points for the first-innings advantage, with Gujarat receiving one point.
Rajasthan also drew with Railways after gaining a first-innings lead. Rajasthan had posted 497, while Railways were dismissed for 338 in their first innings.
In the Plate Group, Sikkim registered the biggest victory of the round, thrashing Arunachal Pradesh by an innings and 328 runs. The result highlighted Sikkim's overwhelming dominance in the contest.
The Pondicherry-Madhya Pradesh match was affected by rain, delaying the start on the fourth day. Maharashtra and Jharkhand also finished their contest without an outright result.
With multiple innings victories, narrow finishes and impressive individual performances, the second round offered a varied picture of the competition. However, Tanay's 11-wicket match haul and Hyderabad's emphatic triumph stood out among Wednesday's results.
