US military strike on alleged drug boat kills four in Caribbean

Washington, Sep 20 (UNI) The U.S. military carried out a strike on an alleged drug-trafficking boat in the Caribbean, killing four people, U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) said Saturday, in the latest in a series of attacks on vessels accused of trafficking narcotics.
Southcom said on the social media platform X that, under its direction, the Joint Force Western Hemisphere “executed a lethal, kinetic strike on a go-fast vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean.”
“Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking,” Southcom said, adding that the four people killed were “narco-terrorists.”
The strike was the latest announced in nearly a month. Two consecutive strikes on boats in the Caribbean had previously killed a total of six people, bringing the number of announced attacks against alleged drug-trafficking vessels between the Americas to 69.
The U.S. strikes have drawn scrutiny from lawmakers over the intelligence used to justify the attacks, with some raising concerns about possible war crimes. In one of the earliest incidents, survivors of an initial strike were reportedly killed in a follow-up attack.
Navy Adm. Frank Bradley has denied that then-Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued an order to “kill everybody” during a September 2025 strike.
Leaders in Colombia and Venezuela have also disputed U.S. claims that the targeted boats were involved in drug trafficking, saying those aboard were not gang members involved in the transnational narcotics trade.
The Trump administration has designated several gangs, including Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel and Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel, as terrorist organizations.
The strikes against vessels accused of drug trafficking intensified in the period leading up to the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January.
In December, House Democrats introduced two bills seeking to curtail the strikes and the administration’s “hostilities within or against Venezuela” ahead of Maduro’s capture and subsequent indictment in New York. UNI AAB CDS
