Venugopal Accuses BJP of Seeking Perpetual Rule, Says People Will Decide Its Political Future

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) Congress general secretary K C Venugopal on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of seeking to capture democratic institutions and remain in power indefinitely, asserting that the pursuit of a change of government through elections was a legitimate democratic exercise, while attempts to perpetuate power at any cost undermined the democratic process.
In a strongly worded post on social media platform X, Venugopal said the Opposition in a functioning democracy sought to replace the government through established institutional mechanisms, including free and fair elections, an independent media and the mobilisation of public opinion.
“The BJP wants to capture institutions and remain in power forever, as its leaders have declared several times,” he claimed, accusing the ruling party of seeking to defy public opinion and prolong its hold on power.
“This is a regime that seeks to defy public opinion and stay in power forever. The people of India will remove this regime from power,” Venugopal said.
Drawing a distinction between the Opposition's constitutional right to challenge an incumbent government and what he described as the ruling party's desire to perpetuate its tenure, the Congress general secretary maintained that the democratic legitimacy of a government depended on its willingness to remain accountable to voters.
“The violation of democracy lies not in seeking a change of regime, but in the intent of a regime to stay in power forever by hook or by crook,” he said.
Venugopal's remarks come amid continuing tensions between the Congress and the BJP over the functioning and independence of democratic institutions, the electoral process and the scope for dissent. The Congress has repeatedly raised concerns about institutional autonomy, the freedom of the press and the conduct of elections, arguing that these are essential safeguards for ensuring accountability and enabling voters to exercise their democratic choice.
The BJP has consistently defended its electoral mandate and rejected Opposition allegations that it is undermining democratic institutions. The ruling party has maintained that its authority derives from the people's verdict in elections.
BJP leaders have also asked the Congress to introspect on the deeds and actions of late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who imposed an internal Emergency in 1975 to continue in power after an adverse verdict by the Allahabad High Court unseating her.
