80 Schools to be closed in Himachal due to zero enrolment

Shimla, May 15 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh Government has decided to close 80 primary and secondary schools across the state where not a single student enrolled in the current academic session.
The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by Education Minister Rohit Thakur at the Directorate of School Education on Wednesday. The minister said these schools have no relevance if they have no students and called for the rational use of resources.
In addition to closures, 87 schools with low enrolment will be merged and converted into co-educational institutions with improved facilities. In the proposed model, one school will run classes from I to X, while the nearby merged school will operate classes XI and XII.
Teachers and non-teaching staff from the closed schools will be added to the surplus pool and shifted to other schools where required.
The meeting also decided that high and senior secondary schools with fewer than 10 students will be downgraded. Schools with 20–25 students will be accommodated within a five-kilometre radius. Deputy directors of the Education Department have been asked to submit data on such schools within a week.
Minister Thakur said the initiative to merge boys’ and girls’ schools will begin from his constituency, Jubbal-Kotkhai. He added that the aim is to provide better education facilities rather than running near-empty schools.
Several teachers who had returned from an educational tour to Singapore also shared their experiences during the meeting, which continued till 7:30 pm. UNI ML SSP
