Srinagar, Apr 2 (UNI) Amid a raging debate over the Waqf Amendment Bill, Kashmiri separatist leader and Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday said that crores of Muslims in India are feeling greatly let down.
Mirwaiz, who also heads the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a conglomerate of major religious bodies of Jammu & Kashmir, had met the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in January highlighting MMU's grave concerns over the proposed amendments. The MMU head told the JPC during their meeting to “engage in meaningful talks with the Muslim community” to address their apprehension and concerns.
“As one watches the ruling party defend the indefensible Waqf Amendment bill in parliament, it is very unfortunate and disturbing that not even one of the serious concerns and reservations raised by the Muslim organisations including the MMU which I lead before the JPC in New Delhi was addressed by them,” Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
“Today crores of Muslims in India like mute spectators are haplessly watching their rights and institutions being blatantly undermined and feel greatly let down,” he added.
