ANC demands accountability, calls for united response after Pahalgam attack

Srinagar, Apr 30 (UNI) J&K Awami National Conference on Wednesday demanded a rigorous and transparent accountability mechanism regarding the security apparatus that “failed to anticipate or prevent” the Pahalgam attack.

The ANC president Khalida Shah termed the attack on tourists last week a barbaric act.

“This atrocity transcends being merely a security breach; it represents a calculated assault on our nation’s unity, the peace process in Jammu and Kashmir, and the constitutional values that bind our diverse Republic together,” Shah said in a statement.
Khalida Shah, who is the elder sister of National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah, said the time has come for a united, resounding, and unambiguous condemnation of this act of terror.

“Such violence strikes at the very heart of Kashmir’s cultural ethos and undermines the democratic principles upon which our Republic stands. We must collectively insist upon a rigorous and transparent accountability mechanism regarding the security apparatus that failed to anticipate or prevent this attack. The collective collapse of the intelligence apparatus that preceded this tragedy warrants a Parliamentary scrutiny and concrete remedial measures," she said.
"Furthermore, the perpetrators, their handlers, and their ideological supporters must be identified, pursued, and brought to justice through the full force of our executive and the judicial system,” she added.

Shah proposed the immediate constitution of a high-level, all-party delegation—including the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and leaders across the political spectrum—to visit Kashmir without delay.
The delegation, she said, should engage with victims' families, civil society, the tourism sector, and youth to understand the real impact and formulate policy grounded in reality.
“Such engagement will signal our collective commitment to Kashmir’s healing process and enable policy formulation based on ground realities rather than partisan considerations,” the ANC president said.

She alleged they have witnessed certain media outlets engaging in irresponsible journalism that vilifies the entire Kashmiri population.

“I urge all political parties to jointly petition the Press Council of India, Union Ministry of Information, Press Bureau of India and other regulatory bodies to take stringent action against media entities that compromise journalistic ethics and endanger the communal harmony through divisive coverage,” she said
Shah called for an economic rehabilitation plan to revive Kashmir’s battered tourism industry, proposing insurance support, a national confidence-building campaign, and long-term infrastructure investment.
