Assam CM meets Meghalaya counterpart, discusses urban flooding, border dispute

Guwahati, June 2 (UNI) Both Assam and Meghalaya on Monday agreed to find a solution to the urban flooding issue in Guwahati which would benefit both States.
Both the neighbouring states also agreed to entrust North East Space Application Centre (NESAC) to do a proper satellite mapping of the area, post which both the states will request IIT Roorkee to suggest a tangible solution to the issue of urban flooding in Guwahati.
Assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this on Monday on his X handle after meeting his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma in Guwahati on Monday to discuss several issues concerning both the states.
The decision on urban flooding in Guwahati assumes significance as the Assam Chief Minister had been very vocal against a private university in neighbouring Meghalaya since last year, holding it responsible for the severe flooding in Guwahati.
The Chief minister has also vowed to move the NGT against the private university as according to him the university has demolished the hills on its campus, which leads to waterlogging in Guwahati.
"Held threadbare discussions on several important issues with Hon'ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya Shri @sangmaconrad ji at the Chief Ministers' Level Meeting in Guwahati," said Sarma on his X handle after the meeting.
"Had a constructive discussion on inter-state issues between Meghalaya and Assam with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Shri @himantabiswa ji," Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote on his X handle after the meeting.
The other import decision taken in the meeting included the decision that Assam and Meghalaya realise that development in both States is mutually inclusive and we need to work together to move ahead in the path of development.
"Assam and Meghalaya will develop the Kulsi Irrigation project to benefit our farmers, which will be funded by Govt of Assam. Both States will jointly build the 55 MW Kulsi Power Project after discussions with the local communities," said Sarma on his X handle.
Both the chief ministers also adopted some decision to end the boundary dispute between the two states.
"Of the 6 resolved boundary disputes, some minor hiccups are there which will soon be resolved after discussions between concerned parties and boundary pillars will be marked. The remaining 6 disputed sites will be resolved at a mutually agreeable time," said the Assam CM on his X handle.
