Kolkata, Apr 11 (UNI) Armed with a Calcutta High Court order to visit the violence-hit Mothabari in Malda district, leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Friday met the families, mostly the women, affected in recent group clashes.
He visited door to door of the affected family members and told reporters at Palpara that these poor people
finally got some breather to speak freely about their woe after a fortnight since the group clashes happened in this district, bordering Bangladesh.
" I told them to remain alert and vigilant and assured them of our support from the BJP as well as from Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Adhikari said as some housewives broke down while narrating the trauma they have been undergoing.
The affected families narrated as how their houses, homes and shops were vandalised and looted by the attackers.
Adhikari had claimed that over 80 shops and houses were "looted and destroyed".
Bloody clashes had broken out between two groups on March 27 in which over 60 people have been arrested, and the Internet has been suspended in three areas.
Adhikari claimed that out of the total arrested persons, 24 people were innocent as they did not take part in any sort of violence on the day.
The BJP leader demanded that the NIA and CBI should probe the violence as to how the clashes occurred and who were the real culprits, who unleashed the terror activity in this border district.
" I tried several times to come here but every time Police declined my requests and finally the judiciary listened to my prayer to visit here," Adhikari tol reporters and thanked the Calcutta high court for allowing him to come for few hours with his personal security personnel.
Adhikari also assured the victims that on behalf of his party they would provide 50 percent as compensation for property damages and for the rest the matter would be considered.He said about 86 families were affected by the looting and arson.
Earlier, the people greeted the nandigram MLA with chanting slogans Jay Shree Ram as he visited three contiguous villages affected by the violence.
