Manipur Women commission chief calls for economic independence of women

Imphal, July 3 (UNI) Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) Chairperson Th. Tiningpham Monsang, today stressed the need for economic independence of women.
Citing global research reports, she noted that women now make up 50% of the world’s population and must be equally empowered.
“Women must earn to survive, just like men. Both men and women should have equal access to income and opportunities for self-sufficiency,” she said.
The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in collaboration with the Centre for Women and Girls, organised a one-day sensitisation programme on the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 at the Conference Hall, DC Office Complex, Chandel.
The event aimed to raise awareness about women’s rights in the workplace and to promote safer, more inclusive work environments.
Monsang stressed the importance of awareness for both men and women to understand and address workplace issues. She noted that sensitisation programmes are crucial for handling sexual harassment complaints and for building safe, respectful workplaces. She added that understanding women’s rights is key to ensuring equality and empowerment.
As the main part of the day’s function, Advocate Th. Rajkishor served as the resource person and delivered a talk on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace.
It is worth mentioning that participants at the event collectively called for continuous education and strict enforcement of the prevailing Act to ensure women’s safety and dignity in the workplace.
The programme was attended by praesidium members W. Phajatombi Devi (Member Secretary, MSCW), T. Chuongsin Koireng (MSCW Member), Md. Firoh Khan (ADC Chandel), and Hechin Haokip (Executive Director, Centre for Women and Girls), along with government officials, local leaders, and representatives from various organisations.
