BJD seeks OHRC intervention in death of Tribal Protester

Bhubaneswar, Apr 24 (UNI) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has urged the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) to intervene in the tragic death of Ettua Ekka, a tribal protester from Barkani village in Sundargarh district.
In a memorandum submitted to the OHRC, the BJD highlighted serious human rights violations surrounding the incident, which occurred on April 20 last.
Ekka, a 35-year-old tribal youth, was reportedly crushed to death by an excavator during a peaceful protest against the expansion of a railway line for the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
The protest aimed to prevent the encroachment of traditional tribal land — a cause rooted in the defense of constitutional and ancestral rights.
The BJD demanded a suo motu inquiry by the Commission into the incident and the circumstances that led to Ekka’s death.
The memorandum further called for an independent investigation into the role of local administration, police personnel, and RSP officials present at the scene. It also sought the immediate registration of FIRs against those responsible for Ekka’s death.
The BJD delegation urged the OHRC to protect tribal land rights, review previous land acquisitions in the region, and withdraw all FIRs filed against innocent tribal protesters.
Additionally, the memorandum demanded the establishment of a structured dialogue mechanism between the administration and tribal communities to address land and livelihood concerns.
The BJD called upon the OHRC to ensure swift and transparent action so that justice is not denied to Ekka’s family and his community.
