BJP Leader Jagannath Pradhan arrested, sent to Jail for assaulting senior OAS Officer

Bhubaneswar, July 3 (UNI) Senior Odisha BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan was arrested by the Commissionerate Police tonight in connection with the assault on senior BMC official Ratnakar Sahu.
The arrest came after Pradhan voluntarily surrendered before the police.
Following his arrest, the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) Association, which had been on an indefinite cease-work agitation across the state for the past three days, announced the withdrawal of their protest.
Pradhan was produced before the SDJM court by the Commissionerate Police. The court rejected his bail application and remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
With the arrest of Jagannath Pradhan, the total number of arrests in the case has now reached six, including a BJP corporator.
All are accused in the June 30 assault on the Additional Commissioner of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Ratnakar Sahu.
The senior BMC official was allegedly dragged out of his office and assaulted by a group of individuals in full public view. Acting on an FIR lodged by Sahu, the police earlier arrested five people, including a BJP corporator.
Subsequently, BJP state president Manmohan Samal suspended all five arrested individuals from the party’s primary membership.
The OAS Association had maintained that Jagannath Pradhan was the prime conspirator behind the attack and insisted on his arrest before ending their agitation.
Following Pradhan’s arrest, hundreds of his supporters gathered outside Bhubaneswar Special Jail, questioning the grounds for his detention, claiming he was not present at the BMC office during the incident.
Pradhan’s legal counsel stated that they will move the Sessions Court for bail tomorrow, arguing that the SDJM court does not have the authority to grant bail under certain sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) invoked in the case.
The strike by OAS officers had severely disrupted administrative functioning across several parts of Odisha, creating an embarrassing situation for the newly formed BJP government in the state. UNI DP SSP
