BJP, police face off over jail jammer in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Apr 5 (UNI) Tensions simmered in the coastal city on Saturday as BJP workers, led by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, staged a protest against the installation of a communication jammer at the district jail, alleging that it has severely disrupted the daily lives of residents in the vicinity.
The protesters, who attempted to block the road and encircle the jail premises, were detained by police, even as the issue took on a political hue with the BJP accusing the Congress-led state government of administrative apathy.
"This is nothing but a failure of governance," Kamath told reporters at the protest site. "If the police were doing their job, this jammer wouldn’t even be necessary."
He further alleged that repeated appeals to top officials had gone unanswered. "We have written to the Police Commissioner, the Director General of Police, and even the Home Minister. Not a single reply. This shows how little they care," Kamath said, vowing that "had it been a BJP government, I would have personally ensured the jammer was removed."
The protest gained further momentum with the arrival of district in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in the city, prompting Kamath to demand immediate action. "Let the minister come here and speak to the people. Let him see what the residents are going through," he said.
The BJP MLA also voiced concern over the impact on public utilities. "The jail is in the heart of the city. The jammer is affecting not just criminals but common people – students, shopkeepers, and doctors. Digital payments are failing, patients can’t reach doctors, and students are unable to access online classes," he said.
A local doctor, posting on social media, highlighted a recent case where a heart patient could not contact the clinic due to poor signal. "This is not just inconvenience – it is dangerous," Kamath added.
Police later confirmed that Kamath and several BJP leaders were detained.
As the issue continues to draw public and political attention, the BJP has warned of intensifying its agitation if the jammer is not removed or its range adjusted.
