Centre commits to Telangana Railway development; Begumpet station to be dedicated to women

Hyderabad, Mar 15 (UNI) Telangana BJP President and Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy has reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to the comprehensive development of Telangana Railways.
Speaking after inspecting the modernization works at Begumpet Railway Station on Saturday, Reddy urged the public and state government to cooperate in these efforts.
He announced that Begumpet Railway Station will soon be dedicated entirely to women, with all staff members — from security personnel to officers — being women.
Reddy also stated that free Wi-Fi facilities will be provided at all railway stations.
He mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the modernization of several stations, including Begumpet, Cherlapalli, Medchal, Yakutpura, Nampally, Kacheguda, and Lallaguda.
He urged the state government to provide land for approach roads to these stations to facilitate better access. Reddy assured that all modernized stations will be equipped with international-level facilities comparable to airports.
During his visit, Reddy reviewed the ongoing modernization work at Begumpet Railway Station, inspected the premises, and assessed the progress.
He stated that the first phase of modernization, costing Rs 26 crore, is nearly complete, with only 5-10 per cent of beautification work remaining. The second phase of development, estimated at Rs 12 crore, will begin immediately afterward.
He emphasised that measures are being taken to ensure that train operations and passenger services remain unaffected during the construction.
Reddy highlighted that this year, Telangana has been allocated Rs 5,337 crore for railway modernization projects and Rs 39,300 crore for development initiatives. These include doubling railway lines, laying new tracks, and converting existing lines into four-track routes.
He announced that the Centre has approved the establishment of a Research Institute in Secunderabad to implement Kavach technology — an advanced train safety system. Reddy expressed pride in Kavach's success as a pilot project and noted that Telangana will play a key role in advancing this globally competitive technology.
The Union Minister emphasised that significant steps have been taken to prevent railway crossing accidents in Telangana. Since the Modi government took office, 453 underpasses and flyovers have been constructed across the state to improve safety and traffic flow.
Reddy revealed plans to run additional trains from Cherlapally Railway Station to ease congestion in Secunderabad. He stated that the first phase of Secunderabad station's modernization, costing Rs 715 crore, will be completed next year. The second phase will follow soon after.
Additionally, the modernisation of Nampally Railway Station, valued at Rs 327 crore, is already underway.
Reddy urged the Telangana government to expedite decisions on land allocation for approach roads to key stations, particularly Cherlapally, ensuring faster project completion.
He reiterated that the Centre remains dedicated to improving Telangana's railway infrastructure and passenger services.
